After a horribly negative year at the school where I've spent the past four years, I decided it was time to move on. I felt discouraged and powerless in a place that I had devoted so much time and energy to kids I deepy loved. My beliefs about effective teaching and successful schools did not match up with those of my administrators -- who made it known that we (the teachers) deserved no voice in decisions that directly impacted our students. For all of these reasons, I found a new job in another Title 1 school in my district. It has been frightening, thrilling, and overwhelming all at the same time. A new beginning.
I'm now the Special Education inclusion teacher at a K-5 elementary school. I feel like a new teacher all over again! It's a very different world and it's taking me time to get used to my new responsibilities and expectations. Overall, though, I feel empowered and encouraged. There is a positive culture in the school that makes sure teachers feel supported -- so they can use their skills to help their students learn.
I have a lot to learn, but I'm excited to start this new journey. Here we go!
Taylor - so, so good to see you writing again. Please share your new journey with us! - John
